The so-called Roman Agora of Athens, alternately referred to as the market of Caesar and Augustus, was realized during the first century B.C. and may well have assumed many of the commercial functions once fulfilled by the old Agora. An architrave inscription (IG II² 3175) on one of the gateways to the complex indicates that financing for the construction project came from the Iulio-Claudians.
