Tholos at the Sanctuary of Asklepios, Epidauros

The Tholos at the Sanctuary of Asklepios in Epidaurus, designed by the architect Polykleitos the Younger, was constructed beginning between 365-360 BCE and was finished 27 years later. The circular Tholos features a Doric architectural style with 26 columns surrounding the cella, and 14 Corinthian columns inside the structure. Beneath the marble floor of the Tholos lies a constructed labyrinth. Although the purpose of this feature is unknown, it is theorized that it could have served as a dwelling for snakes, emblems of Asklepios, or could have been used for healing or burial rites. In Pausanias, the structure is described as having paintings by Pausias depicting Love and Drunkenness, along with slabs written in Doric Greek inscribed with the names of those healed at the Sanctuary, the illness they suffered from, and the treatment they received.
