Pleiades

A Greek-style theater cut into the bedrock slope of a hill in the Neapolis district of Syracuse. The theater was renovated by Hieron II of Syracuse in the later 3rd c. BC, at which point it had a circular orchestra; during this renovation, inscriptions show that the cunei of the cavea were identified by the names of Hieron's family members. The foundations for the stage building may also belong to this phase. Another round of renovations in the Roman period left the orchestra with its current semicircular form.
